Thalia:

The design for ‘Thalia’ reflects a yacht of classic lines incorporating the timeless elements so attractive in an earlier generation of large racing yachts.  Although her above waterline appearance with long overhangs and classic sheerline appears  generation of large racing yachts.  Although her above waterline appearance, with long overhangs and classic sheerline, appears to be aimed more towards aesthetic rather than performance goals, this design is decidedly performance oriented.  Within the requirements dictated by internal accommodation arrangements and the steel hull construction, ‘Thalia’s hull lines are fair and understated.  With fine angle of entry and long straight run, she has shown to have an easily driven and powerful hull form. Due to both comfort and performance goals, the initial design studies pursued a keel design that would offer the best possible performance at low angles of heel without exceeding a draft limit of 4.1 metres.  This requires a large volume, low resistance bulb keel configuration.  To further enhance the yacht’s windward capabilities, asymmetrical wings have been incorporated to effectively increase the keel performance without having to resort to the engineering and financial implications of the centreboard configuration. The interior design is by Elmar Meurer of New York and reflects the client’s requirement for a traditional styling and richly grained woods, reminiscent of the panelled interiors of turn-of-the-century private yachts.  The arrangement incorporates a full width owner’s suite and four generous size guest cabins on the lower level.  Two of these cabins are adjacent to the owner’s suite with direct access to the deck saloon.  Two additional guest cabins are more privately located with forward entry via the lower split-level cockpit and dining area. The primary feature of ‘Thalia’ is the spacious deck saloon with spectacular windows and direct access through glass panelled doors onto the outside dining area.  This space can be protected with a large sun awning that retracts into the deck saloon roof when required and allows for maximum lifestyle flexibility. Great care has been taken to ensure privacy between owner’s party and crew.  This aspect features an aft pilot house and sail control station for operating procedures.  The captain and engineer’s accommodation is aft, with direct access into the pilothouse and engine room.  Other members of the crew are accommodated forward.
