Back in the early ‘80s when Lion New Zealand was under construction for Peter Blake’s second ‘Round the World Race challenge, Tom Clark and Michael Fay put together the original concept for the construction of a 100 foot spec. yacht.
Peter joined Tom and Michael as a member of the board of directors of Southern Pacific Boatyard, the shipyard they established to build the yacht, as did Tim Gurr, the principal builder. Tim Gurr pulled together a selection of New Zealand yacht builders on a new industrial site (some distance from the water) to create the Southern Pacific construction team.
